What good looks like
"Full-stack" must mean both halves
Vet any full-stack candidate against both halves:
- Database first: designs the schema before the UI; can index, paginate, and explain a query plan.
- API craft: auth, validation, error contracts, and versioning, not just routes that return JSON.
- Frontend beyond rendering: state architecture, accessibility, and Core Web Vitals awareness.
- Deployment ownership: CI/CD, environments, monitoring, "works on my machine" isn't a deliverable.
- Judgment about the seams: can articulate what belongs server-side vs. client-side and why.
- Depth in at least one layer. A real full-stack engineer is T-shaped; someone equally shallow everywhere is a generalist, not full-stack.
