- The event loop, for real: can explain what blocks it, how to detect it, and when to reach for worker threads or a queue.
- Database craft: query optimization, indexing strategy, transactions, and connection pool sizing, most "Node is slow" problems are database problems.
- Caching judgment: what to cache in Redis, for how long, and how to invalidate it (the hard part).
- Failure design: timeouts, retries with backoff, circuit breakers, graceful shutdown, production systems are defined by how they fail.
- Observability: structured logging, metrics, and tracing in place before the incident, not after.
- TypeScript throughout, plus testing habits (unit + integration) that hold up in CI.
